New Year, New Me, or Elevated Me?

A new year means a chance at a fresh start where you leave behind the burdens of the past. A new year is an opportunity to think of goals you want to achieve for yourself. I always find it hard to be motivated during the winter months, but with excitement from the new year, I like to set resolutions to stay motivated. I am sure you’ve heard the saying, “new year, new me,” but I personally like to say, “new year, elevated me.” I don’t like thinking that I am changing who I am, but instead, working towards a better version of who I already know I am. If you are indecisive like me, you have a hard time deciding on the resolutions you want to pick until it is halfway through January and procrastinating gets real. Below are some ideas to add to your 2023 resolution list.

Possible Resolutions:

  • Make a new friend (at Lakehead, in the community, online)

  • Join a club that caters to your interest, maybe even try something new

  • Cook something new each week; keep it exciting!

  • Set a reading goal! (Example: I am going to read 20 books by the end of the year)

  • Create a financial savings plan on a spreadsheet (to prevent overspending)

  • Volunteer in your community; set an amount of time you’d like to do this every week

  • Travel to a place you’ve never been before. It does not have to be an international trip, it can be as simple as a place in your community that you haven’t had the opportunity of visiting yet

  • Clean out that closet; donate what you don’t need!

  • Dedicate some time to getting familiar with/learning a new language

  • Get a penpal! Get to know more about a culture that is not your own

  • Keep a journal in which you write one entry every night (as little as one sentence) about what you did/felt on that day. At the end of the year, look at all you’ve accomplished.

    • You can do the same with a “picture book”

  • Create a memory box to keep track of all your favourite memories; customize it! For example: look here

    • I have one of these; it’s always fun to sit down and look through

  • Last but definitely not least, READ THE ARGUS EVERY WEEK!

  • Follow the Argus on Instagram: @theargus_lakehead

If you have already made your new year's resolutions, please share them in the comment section below- we would love to hear what our peers are up to! If you think you will have trouble sticking to a routine with the resolutions, start small, then add more resolutions as time goes on if you think you can handle it. Grab a friend to hold you accountable, someone who asks you if you’ve completed your goals during your journey.
