Welcome to the Bay

New year, new semester, new students! Lakehead’s winter semester has already started in full swing. Here are a few highlights of TBay as you get settled in!

Home to almost 111,000 people, Thunder Bay is a city on Lake Superior, in northwestern Ontario. With access to a wide range of sports and activities, Thunder Bay serves as the heart of a significant recreational and cultural region. While it may not be the biggest city around, it is still one of the more interesting places to be. After all, where else can you find a cinnamon bun with pink icing? Apart from safety, this small city has everything one would need to live comfortably!

From Kakabeka Falls, the second-highest waterfall in the province, to the Sleeping Giant, Thunder Bay’s highly famed landmark, this city is home to a plethora of beautiful delights of nature! Visiting the Sleeping Giant at least once during your stay at Lakehead is essential: if you make it up there, the views from the top of the Giant are jaw-dropping. The Terry Fox monument is another must-visit attraction right outside the city, made to honour the efforts of Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope.

Besides its natural attractions, Thunder Bay also offers its residents adrenaline-filled activities such as skiing and snowboarding. If that doesn’t, you can also go ice climbing, or even ice racing! However, be warned, these sports are not for the faint of heart.

Lakehead Varsity teams often play home games every other weekend. The atmosphere and vibe of a university basketball or hockey game are unmatched. When you find the time, go cheer for our Thunderwolves as they take on formidable opponents in their games! These games are a fun experience and relatively inexpensive. If spectating isn’t up your alley, take a look at The Bay’s Winter Bucket List for more things to do.

While having fun is integral to the university experience, students must also aim to be dutiful in their academics. Don’t skip out on your classes, have your readings done and get your assignments in on time. Always put your academics first! Well, maybe not always (don’t be afraid to loosen up a bit from time to time) but stay on top of your work.

Finally, a few words of advice to all the new students, learn to manage your finances. Budgeting is a very important tool to utilise in these years of your life. Check out an earlier article here for tips on how to budget! Moreover, stay safe when venturing out into the city and dress appropriately for the weather.

That being said, The Argus warmly welcomes all new students to Thunder Bay and if you haven’t already follow us on Instagram to keep up to date with our latest articles!
