LU Wrestlers head south to compete at Nationals

The Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Wrestling Championships were held in the Thunderdome on Feb. 24 and 25.
Emma Brightwell, a fifth year Lakehead wrestler, had not been to a tournament in a long time. Plagued with injuries and inconveniences, the Guelph Open was the first time she stepped out on the wrestling mat at a tournament in two years. Fortunately, the lack of previous competition did not slow her down. She finished the day with a gold medal around her neck.
The Lakehead wrestling team competed at the Senior Provincial Age Group Championships at Brock University on Nov. 26. The women placed fourth overall, while the team as a whole placed seventh.
On Nov. 19, thirteen members of the Lakehead University Men’s Wrestling team competed at the Toronto Open Wrestling Tournament, which took place at the University of Toronto. For many of the wrestlers that attended this tournament, it was their second out of town tournament of the year; excitement and anxiety were running high, as well as with the amount of moustaches.
The Lakehead Open tournament thrilled the Thunderdome on Saturday morning, as wrestling fans enjoyed the hospitality that the Lakehead varsity team offered both on and off the mat.
The Lakehead University men’s and women’s wresting teams added depth to each side with 3 recruits to the men’s team and 4 recruits to the women’s team. The men’s team welcomes Jake Devlin, Ajit Mundy, and Shane Babulall, while the women’s team embraces Kate Beaulieu, Steph Tonn, Kelsey Dayler and Megan Smith.
Lakehead University’s wrestling team had a respectable showing at the OUA provincials held here in Thunder Bay on Saturday.
