Justice is served

Last Friday’s meeting of the LUSU board of directors saw the appointments of a number of officers for the 2011/12 year, including Chief and Associate justices and the Chief Returning Officer. The board also heard several year-end reports from commissioners and centres, including Events, Food Bank, Campaigns, the Graduate Student Association, and Aboriginal Awareness.

When the Board of Directors decided not to approve the results of the executive elections last month, they did so in secret. One of the primary concerns of the students who challenged that decision during a General Meeting on March 10th was the lack of transparency. In response, the directors approved the release of the discussion that prompted their rejection of the Chief Returning Officer’s report.

Election results in turmoil

Before the Chief Returning Officer has even presented his election report to the LUSU Board of Directors, the legitimacy of the results is being called into question. A tense, protracted meeting on February 18th saw numerous candidates level accusations of a faulty election process, while CRO Dyke Nwosah fired back with accusations of his own surrounding violations of campaign rules by candidates.

A representative from the Argus usually gets to sit in (mostly) silent judgment at our student union’s board meetings. This includes LUSU’s “in camera” sessions, where non-board members are kicked out of the room and board discusses matters that are considered too sensitive for public ears.

Second time’s a charm

After a disastrous Board of Directors election three weeks ago where student turnout didn’t even approach the 10% required for quorum, a by-election was scheduled to be held early last week. After modest student turnout this time around, the elections were successful.
