The majority of candidates for the next LUSU executive convened in the board room to speak with Orillia students via teleconference on Jan. 31. Originally set for Feb. 1, the date for the Orillia debates was changed at the last minute so as not to conflict with the National Day of Action.
On Feb. 2, LUSU executive contenders addressed a crowded Outpost to vie for student votes. The debates proceeded with little interaction between candidates, each seemingly more focused on outlining their own vision for Lakehead than on challenging those of their peers.
The all-candidates meeting last Friday marked the close to nominations for aspiring LUSU executives and board members. Following the campaign period from September 26th to October 10th, advanced polls are set for Thursday, October 6th with general polls on October 11th and 12th.
With the federal election coming up on May 2nd, and all of the talk of tuition aid floating around government, it seems a high time for students to step up and vote.
When the Board of Directors decided not to approve the results of the executive elections last month, they did so in secret. One of the primary concerns of the students who challenged that decision during a General Meeting on March 10th was the lack of transparency. In response, the directors approved the release of the discussion that prompted their rejection of the Chief Returning Officer’s report.
