Toward the end of the fifth season of Friends, Joey is cast as the lead in a movie, Shutter Speed. The thriller is being filmed in the desert outside of Vegas, and Joey heads out there, only for production to be delayed indefinitely. The overriding joke is that Joey considers it to be his big break, but the picture’s plot is a tired cliché, and he is the only one who doesn’t realize it.

It would be off-putting to walk into a doctor’s office only to be confronted by a hacksaw-wielding construction worker. Conversely, a doctor doing nearly anything in the same situation wouldn’t draw a second glance. This is because they have their roles, and when they wildly exceed them, bad things usually happen. Action movies typically have very specific roles.

Dirty Cinephiles: Due Date

I’m not surprised. Not disappointed, not ecstatic, just, okay. While Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis certainly had chemistry on par with any great pairing, the film’s punch lines merely brought the audience to a simmer, never a boil.
