I’m Thirsty

The LUSU Sustainability Initiative recently polled students via MyInfo, asking if they felt the sale of bottled water should be banned on campus. While I speak unofficially, it’s been said that over 6,000 people, including students, staff, faculty, and alumni voted in the poll. To my astonishment, over two thirds of the participants apparently voted in favour of the ban. I’m not exactly sure what these thousands of people have against bottled water, and quite frankly I don’t care.

The Honest Students speak out

It is May and you are sitting with hundreds of your fellow graduates awaiting your turn to prance on stage and receive your degree. Your name is called and you spring up from your seat and race to the stage grinning from ear to ear because you are within minutes of graduating. Before you shake the hand of the honourable President, and walk off stage a new graduate, you should ponder this: “I wonder how proud my family would be today if they knew that I do not deserve this degree because I have cheated throughout my entire program and I have gotten away with it.”

A Large Student Club Responds

Thank you for your input Brad, and we are glad you enjoyed the pizza. You raise a great point, you don’t need to buy into a bar scene or have drinking stories to be an adult, but you would be way more interesting if you did.

A Solution to the Tuition Fee Increases

The message was sent out on March 2nd by LUSU. “What is $464 next year?” Well that is the amount that the university wants to raise tuition by next year. We the students have been called into action by our student union to oppose these increases. I propose a having a better question. What is $583.04 every year? $583.04 is the amount of the compulsory Ancillary Fee that goes to LUSU. What if LUSU was disbanded?

A reality check for students protesting tuition increase

Today on my way to class I walked through the protest outside of the senate chambers in which students were protesting the proposed tuition fee increases and was surprised (although I shouldn’t have been) by how many people were participating.

Undressing LUSU

With all due respect to the winners, LUSU elections are a joke. Of the fifteen or twenty percent of students who do vote, one poll clerk estimated that 80% had no idea who the candidates were. Students were often overheard saying they voted based on someone’s name, their picture, or simply at random. This isn’t to say that Slim, Neva, and Brent won’t do a good job or that they aren’t qualified – just that they probably weren’t elected on merit.

Ready to take the helm – thanks for the opportunity

I would just like to humbly congratulate all the other contestants – Louise Haukeness, Tomas Valiquette and Franz Masini – who ran for the position of VP Finance for a great campaign. You guys ran with your heart in the right place and I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Razzing Reznor

As I was reading the article “The Oscars Snubs and Selections” I found myself enraged by the comments made about the Best Original Score Category. The exact line that completely turned me off of the article was: “I can’t believe we are now living in the kind of world where Trent Reznor’s name is prefaced by ‘acadamy award nominee’”.

A case of disinformation

This refers to the article by Carl Clutchey of the Chronicle-Journal on the Jackfish Bay Area of Concern, published in the January 27, 2011 issue.

How much should the internet cost?

According to stopthecap.com, students will be paying over $70 a month. I say this as a student who uses well over 5GB of internet use a month – that first 5GB will cost me $70, and then I will be charged $0.05 for every extra MB (according to Roger’s “Flex Rate Plan”). This does not include the Government Regulatory Fee.

A belated Christmas thanks

Thank you to the Lakehead University community for your support of Christmas Miracle last semester. With your support, the LUSU event committee was able to donate over 300 gifts to children and families in Thunder Bay!

Bell: biting the taxpayers who fed them

I’m disappointed in the general lack of coverage of the recent CRTC ruling on Usage Based Billing (UBB) and internet providers. Rogers and Bell, two of the largest monopolistic companies in Canada have successfully lobbied our government to allow even more anti-competitive practices that will hurt the vast majority of Canadians and Canadian businesses.

Harry Potter means different things for different people

I really enjoyed the two contrasting Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows reviews in the November 29th Argus. As a huge Potter fan, I loved Rita Skeeter’s article because I totally agree with everything she wrote. Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life since I was 9 years old, and now it is coming to an end with the release of these last two movies.

Be proud of TBayTel

I don’t believe the comments that people are sending out about Tbaytel in this city. Tbaytel has done something more impressive than any other local company has ever done and all people do is put the company down?

Biased article was personal attack on PM

Recently there was a very slanted story published in The Argus “Climate Change bill quashed – by ‘dictator’ Harper”. What a pile of drivel!

Lame dads get no love

I read the Argus today and found most of it okay. The stuff with Galloway was a little one-sided for people who know nothing about him. However, that was not the problem. The problem came when I got to the comics, specifically Lame Dad. The thought of someone hanging himself should not be trivialized in [...]

Defending the hometown boy

In the November 22nd edition of The Argus, a short article was published by a Mr. Trevor Cava entitled ‘R E S P E C T’. The article was regarding a major issue that has received much discussion in the last two years: respect among NHL players.

‘Post Mortem: How do you solve a problem like the Outpost?

Let me first start by saying, the overall work that LUSU is doing is beneficial to the Lakehead population. I have never been happier with the current selection of executives. I feel they are friendly, personable, and knowledgeable in regard to the happenings at Lakehead. The one obvious weight to the group is Chris Vaillant.

Your own personal jesus

I, like many of our generation, consider myself an atheist or – perhaps after smoking a joint – an agnostic. I have grown up seeing religion and its accompanying myths somewhere along a scale from silly to dangerous.

Students should support the Outpost

In a recent issue of the Argus there was an article written about the Outpost. I read this article thinking there was going to be a plug or two inspiring the students to support their pub. Instead, I was bombarded by an entire article about two individuals who were mistreated by LUSU’s newest Executives, namely VP Finance Vaillant.
