Ask Amy: Space travel

Welcome back to another exciting year here at Lakehead, which will hopefully be filled with lots of rainbows and butterflies! However, given that we live in the great frozen wasteland that is Thunder Bay I can’t see there being too many butterflies and rainbows in the winter (do rainbows occur in winter?).

Ask Amy: Year-end wrap-up

Dear Readers, I would like to thank you for a great year of inquisitive questions and hope I provided insightful, if unexpected, answers. I know that some of you are thanking God that the year is over, and that you don’t have to listen to my senseless ramblings for a whole four months while you [...]

Dasti’s Blast ‘n’ Cast: Red Rock Ice Fishin Tournament

Ian Dasti F’Reals If you’re new to fishing (or trying something new), it is very important you give it a fair shake. Whether you are learning to fly fish or trying to win a tournament for the first time, it is too easy to let one bad experience prevent you from something you would have [...]

Dasti’s Blast ‘n Cast: Ice Fishing Tournament

If you’re new to fishing (or trying something new in fishing), it is very important you give it a fair shake. Whether you are learning to fly fish or trying to win a tournament for the first time, it is too easy to let one bad experience prevent you from doing something you would have otherwise enjoyed.

Ask Amy: Easter Bunny

The exact origins of the Easter bunny are unknown, although it has been suggested that the Easter bunny originated somewhere in Germany. Others think the celebration of the Easter bunny originated long ago with the conversion of Pagan peoples to Christianity.

Potato Soup for the Masses

Eating Local with Mama Ludwig Ayla Ludwig Argus The greatest and most genuine review of a winter festival can only come from a seven-year-old, proclaiming, “This was the best day of my life!” Those who shovelled paths through snow four feet deep, dug quinzees, packed boxes full of snow to create blocks for carving, and [...]

Dasti’s Blast ‘n’ Cast: Lost fish

As promised, this week’s article will be focusing on the main ways I’ve lost fish over the years and what I learned from those experiences. First, it is important to note that in fishing, hunting, and most anything in life, every change to your game plan will have pros and cons associated with it – you’ll see what I mean in a minute.

Dasti’s Blast ‘n’ Cast: “Secret Lake”

A few weeks ago, my fishing buddy James and I were feeling particularly zealous and decided to hike into a lake (James calls it “secret lake”) just off spruce river road. Initially, the prospect was exciting, because we had done very well at this lake in the summer (limits of 4 decent Walleye). We figured we had a decent idea of how to begin finding fish in the lake, especially since it isn’t too big.

Ask Amy: Valentine’s Day

Ask Amy: Valentine’s Day

I agree that the traditional Valentine’s Day rituals are a little overdone. The car ride to pick up your significant other, the greeting at the door with the flowers you paid way too much for and the chocolates that probably look better in the box than they taste (unless you splurge and get the good Lindt ones), then the dinner at the restaurant that is also likely overpriced and underwhelming.

Whacha gonna do with all that Carcass?

Whacha gonna do with all that Carcass?

Don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s not socially acceptable to ask your dinner hostess at if you can have the chicken carcass at the end of the evening. Here, I’ll give you the perfect sentence to approach the subject: “So, [insert dinner host name], whatcha gonna do with the bird carcass?”

Ask Amy: How do you pick these questions?

Dear Amy, I’m a long-time reader, first-time questioner. I really enjoy reading your column – it’s entertaining and fun. But I’ve often wondered where I can submit questions to be answered here? I dropped this one by the Argus Office, but are there other places I can bring the questions? And how do you decide [...]
